When trying to grow your audience online, having a niche is key.

There are endless topics you could write about online…

… from heart-health nutrition, to picky eating, to easy weeknight recipes, or even advice on starting a business.

But the MOST successful digital businesses speak to one person.

And they do it extremely well.

Gone are the days of “lifestyle” blogs or websites giving generic advice on any topic under the sun.

To succeed online in 2024, you need to solve a specific problem for a specific person.

And you need to become “known” for that thing.

Put yourself in Google’s shoes for a minute….

… you have billions of users searching on Google each day…

… and you WANT to show searchers the best, most trustworthy information in the results.

But the internet is absolutely flooded with information.

Especially now, in the age of AI.

And when there are 500 different blog posts written about the same topic….

… how do you select the best ones to show people?

Answer: Authority, experience, and expertise.

  • Authority = backlinks and mentions.
  • Experience = real-life experience with the subject.
  • Expertise = education, credentials, or clear topical knowledge.

These 3 things together = TRUST.

And trust is what’s needed to rank well online, grow an engaged audience, and ultimately, create and sell paid offers that help your people.

Here’s an example: If you Google “best snacks for a swim meet”…

Here’s who ranks at the top of the search results:

  • Eat Swim Win (website run by a dietitian swim coach)
  • Swimming.org (authoritative swimming site)
  • USA Swimming (authoritative swimming site)
  • Fast Swim Academy (swim school run by a swim coach)
  • Reddit r/Swimming (real-life experiences)
  • Swimming World Magazine (swimming news site)

EVERYONE ranking at the top of the search results has authority, expertise, and/or real-life experience in the swimming niche.

So if you want to write about swim meet snacks as a mommy blogger who writes about anything under the sun….

… it’s not going to cut it.

So… is your brand speaking to everyone? Or is it highly specific?

If it’s the former, try this:

Step 1: Pick one thing you already do and know well or a problem you’ve solved for yourself or others.

Step 2: Envision a specific person who’d benefit from this knowledge and expertise.

Step 3: Pick one platform and consistently publish content to help that person.

Step 4: Pay attention to what’s working and do more of it.

Step 5: Continue gaining hands-on experience and deeper knowledge of your niche.

Step 6: Share what you learn with your audience.

Step 7: Listen to their questions and feedback. Create more content around it.
